When you start speaking a new language, you mostly just say words because someone told you they are true.
You learn and memorize words, string them together, and take the risk to say them (terrified they actually don’t mean what you’re trying to say… at all).
But, the more you say them, repeat them to yourself, put them into practice and watch them work together beautifully… you begin to believe them.
Fluency is when you speak words, not because someone told you they are true, but because your heart believes them.
In Guatemala, I’ve been serving with Antigua House of Prayer. Three 2 hour sets a day, where we sit, pray, sing, the same verses: over and over and over. At first, it felt so repetitive and to be honest, I got bored. But then, one of the leaders reminded us why we do House of Prayer:
We often say things about Jesus, because someone told us they are true. But when we sit, pray, sing, and declare truth over and over and over again, our hearts actually begin to believe it’s true.
I can say the Lord is my shepherd, but everything changes when I believe it’s true.
I can say God is a good father, but everything changes when I believe it’s true.
I can say I am God’s kid and don’t have to do a single thing to earn that, but everything changes when I believe it’s true.
So, I’m learning how to sit with Jesus, to sit with His words until they become mine, no matter how long it takes, and it’s the best thing ever.
Psalm 27:4 “One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple.”
